Departmental Profile

This is one of the oldest departments of the college and has a heritage of academic excellence passed through by generations of renowned teachers alumni. The Department has been established in 1964. Since then both Honours and General Course have been introduced in this department. The Department is now endowed with four full-time teachers and two Guest Lecturers. The total number of students in this department is 360 (Currently, 117 Honours students and 243 students in General Course). The faculty members are mainly followed ‘Chalk and talk’ teaching approach. The department is constantly trying to adopt several types of modern teaching techniques for the students’ betterment. Although Faculty members have been using Learning Management System, ICT tools.

The Department has introduced the following teaching techniques

  • Special Lectures are periodically arranged by the department to enlighten the students by the eminent academicians from other universities.
  • Peer Group interactions
  • In a regular basis we are conducting Teachers-Parents meeting for student’s improvement.
  • Tutorials are taken at regular basis.
  • A separate Departmental Seminar Library to assist student’s further reference work.
  • The students of the department are encouraged to participate in debates, quiz and essay writing competition in state level on topics related not only to the syllabus but also to current affairs of related to national and international context.
  • They are also encouraged to participate in various college activities such as publication of College Magazine, Wall Magazine and cultural activities.

Programme & Course Outcome

From the beginning day of every courses, this college inspires students to motivate themselves on the platform of outcome based education, so that, in continuation to the completion of UG syllabus teachers enlighten them following avenues

SWOC

  • Strength
    • Department has six faculty members including two SACT who are committed to impart quality education to its disciples and they will take the classes regularly and complete the syllabus within time frame.
    • Department has its own departmental library apart from central library of college where students are provided books.
  • Weakness
    • The department faces a shortage of classrooms equipped with modern technology, such as smart classrooms.
    • There is a need for greater awareness and training regarding the use of the LMS portal to incorporate more advanced educational technologies.
  • Opportunity: The Department has the following objective:
    • Provide students with sufficient study materials for both the version i.e. Bengali and English
    • Improve their CGPA grade in every semester.
    • Create an opportunity for visiting various democratic institutions’ places like State Assembly, Parliament of India, so that they can have practical knowledge and can be able to grasp the democratic procedures. Apart from this, special lecture, faculty exchange programme, etc. are to be organized.
  • Challenges
    • Many students from Hindi-medium backgrounds struggle with both English and Bengali.
    • There is a shortage of certain textbooks in the Bengali version.
    • The recent syllabus changes under NEP have resulted in a lack of adequate reference books.

Future Plans of the Department

The faculty members of the department propose the following initiatives for the future to enhance both student development and the department’s growth.

  • Launching a Post-Graduate Programme in Political Science.
  • Introducing a departmental journal.
  • Providing additional training on the LMS for both faculty and students.
  • Offering coaching for students interested in competitive exams such as WBCS, SSC, and others
