Departmental Profile
From long time back, the subject Economics was taught in Maharani Kasiswari College as a ‘Pass subject for Honours courses’ or as one of the three subjects chosen by pure General stream girls, in Graduate level. Since 1978 the department offered teaching of the subject at Higher Secondary level also. Honours course in Economics started in the year 1996.
Presently Economics is taught as a combination General or Generic Elective subject of different B.A. / B. Sc. Honours and General courses. For under-graduate course it has passed through (2 + 1) system, (1+1+1) system. From the academic session 2018 -19, it has undertaken the semester wise Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), along with all other B.A. / B. Sc./ B.Com subjects taught in the college. Currently the new Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF) has been undertaken from the academic year 2023-24 for the new admitted students along with the CBCS (for the older semesters),.
Presently there are two teachers in the Department, one full time teacher, Miss Vishaka Lama (Head of the Department) and one guest lecturer Mr. Malay Bhunia. After the retirement of the previous HoD, Smt. Sunanda Mukherjee on 31st July 2022, Miss Vishaka Lama carried out the responsibility of the Economics Department as the single full time Teacher, with the occasional help and service of some State Aided College Teachers (SACT) from other department, till Mr. Malay Bhunia joined as a guest lecturer in October 2023. Honours course was offered by the Department for few years, but the course became non – viable due to very low enrollment of students and instability of both the students and the part – time teachers.
Still, we are happy to put on record that many of our Alumni – both General and Honours, after completion of their B.A. / B.Sc. degree, have proceeded to higher education and some of them have established themselves in various fields like IT sector, Govt. Sector, School teaching, etc.
