Departmental Profile

The Department of Geography launched its journey in 2008-2009 as General subject and marched ahead for pretty long time as General subject only. It obtained approval for introducing Geography as Honours subject in 2016. There is a huge demand amongst students for opting Geography as Honours subject. There are at present 37 sanctioned seats for Honours. There are One Associate Professor and Seven SACT teachers (6 SACT I & 1 SACT II) in the Department. The Department has produced innumerable students both Honours and General throughout the years. Many students of the Department have established themselves in various sectors.

Besides teaching, the Department organizes class wise seminar, debate and prepares students for Quiz competition and Group discussion, so that they can keep pace with the time. The students can express their views independently through their writing in the wall Magazine and teachers guide them properly in this regard. Above all, the faculty members are always ready to render all possible assistance and guidance to students within and outside the campus as and when required. Consequently students get through the final examination with flying colours every year and go for further higher studies.

Program & Course Outcome

The CBCS syllabus as set by the University of Calcutta gives emphasis on nurturing and developing the basic skills related to different aspects of the subject. On successful completion of the course the students can not only pursue Masters in Geography but also in allied disciplines like Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS), Disaster Management, Environmental Studies, Population Studies, Regional Planning, Urban Planning, Travel and Tourism Management, etc. After completion of higher studies, the students can pursue Research Work in different institutions or choose to work as teachers in schools, colleges and universities. They can also choose Administrative positions through Union Public Service Commission, State Public Service Commission, Staff Selection Commission, etc. The various job prospects can be cartographer, GIS analyst, scientist, urban planner, etc.

Students develop better ability of social interaction through field works. They have informed awareness of issues and contribute towards national development. They understand the man-nature/ environment relation better and contributes towards sustainability. They also learn about scientific thinking and research designs.

Strength

  • All faculty members is well qualified and quality contribution teaching in department and Administrative work in college
  • Enrollment of students is satisfactory and it increases gradually
  • We have laboratory with sufficient instrument to conduct practical class
  • A very friendly and conducive atmosphere and a strong bonding among the students and teachers in our department

Weakness

  • Acute shortage of substantive teachers. Our department had only one substantive post
  • The physical infrastructure is also not adequate.
  • The department seminar library needs to have more books and journals
  • Lack of communication skills among students.
  • Students from vernacular background
  • Department needs up gradation of laboratory and library
  • Department has no permanent non-teaching staff to maintain department and helping with practical work
  • We have no smart class room
  • Department needs at least 6 computers, one scanner for scanning different maps

Opportunities

  • Warm and free student teacher interaction and counselling of students for higher education and career planning
  • The college authority is in relentless hunt for finance augment infrastructure and to create teaching post

Challenges

  • To provide sufficient number of practical classrooms and ICT enabled hall to make the teaching learning more attractive
  • To bridge the gap between slow learners and advanced learners
  • To channelize the available resources for betterment of the students
  • To encourage the students to learn various aspects of Remote Sensing and GIS in the present
  • Establish skills in handling the GPS instruments during field studies
  • Creating awareness about Digital learning for adopting curriculum introduction of NEP
  • Upliftment of Departmental library up to the mark
  • Developing skills in handling the census, gazetteers, etc. for preparing poster and project works

Future Plans of the Department

  • To start or intends PG programmed in Geography
  • To undertake Minor Research Project
  • To conduct of National/State level workshop/ Seminars/ Conference in Recent issues in Geography
  • To start Geo-informatics courses
  • To increase the placement opportunities for the department students with the collaboration of student placement cell of college
  • To further increase the capacity of departmental library
  • Regular arrangement of parent teacher meeting and alumni meet to strengthen the relationship with the department
  • The department has also planned to prepare students for higher studies and competitive examinations by providing coaching, career counseling, etc.
