Departmental Profile

The college started the Department of Commerce in the year 2005. Since then, this department has created a symbol of excellence in commerce education. The Department has four Assistant Professors, six State Aided College Teachers and two Guest Faculties. Also teachers from other departments like Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics take classes for B.Com students. Semesterized Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been implemented in B.COM course in the academic year 2017-18 and Credit and Curriculum Framework (CCF-2022 as per the National Education Policy 2020) in the academic year 2023-24 as per the direction and notification of the University of Calcutta. Classes are held on a regular basis including Tutorial and Remedial Classes. Proper attention is given to each student for good performance in Internal Assessment as well as Semester-end Examination. Students are also called for Parents-Teacher Meeting for their holistic development. IT Practical classes are regularly held for the students as per the requirement of syllabus in a well-equipped IT Lab. Full support is provided by the respective supervisors for progressing the project report of B.COM Semester VI Honours students. In order to support the academic performance of the students, lot of new books for all semesters have been recommended by the Head of the Department of Commerce and finally arranged by the Librarians of this college. All the teachers are very much sincere and committed to the various departmental activities.  For the benefit of the students, the department has its own departmental library. Students can borrow books from there, apart from the college main library.

Different orientation programmes, seminars, special lectures, study tours have been organized by the Department of Commerce with active participation of teachers, students and non-teaching staff. It helps students in experiential learning. Also students of this department participate in various activities like NCC, NSS, cultural programmes and sports organised by the college. 

Department of Commerce has different academic activities round the year like departmental bulletin board and departmental publications.

 This department has online teaching-learning facilities like Google Class Room and LMS. This is a virtual class system where students can access study notes, questions and other academic matters as provided by the departmental teachers.

  • Teachers are always trying to make the classroom teaching-learning more productive and fruitful.

  • More effort is needed to increase the number of state and central government funded projects to strengthen the department.
  • Soft skills and communications skills of students need to be furthered.
  • Number of volumes and journals in the departmental library need to increase.
  • For the benefit of the students Industry visit activities have to be improved.
  • All educational activities with financial assistance should be promoted.

Opportunities:

  • Being situated in the heart of the city, Maharani Kasiswari College is blessed with several unique strengths. The College is well connected by road, railway, metro station and boats. The metropolitan city provides students opportunities for working when they learn.
  • Students and faculty members are motivated to upgrade their knowledge through online learning platforms.
  • A graduate in commerce has many opportunities as he/she can join any private institute or government organisation. Students are doing professional courses such as Company Secretary, Chartered Accountancy and Cost and Management Accountancy.
  • A graduate in Commerce, having specialisation in Banking and Finance will have opportunities in banks and insurance companies.
  • The strong alumni base of the department can be involved to contribute to the institution towards excellence and one of the best colleges of the city.
  • Quiet a big number of students hailing from other states of the country have taken admission, showcasing the diversification in the students’ portfolio.
  • More infrastructural development in form of auditorium and number classes with modern amenities are on the cards, promising a better departmental endeavor.

Challenges:

  • Teachers are jointly engaged in bringing awareness of commerce education among the guardians and students.
  • Lack of proper infrastructure due to sharing infrastructure has been a point of stunted growth.
