Departmental Profile

The Tourism & Travel Management has been introduced in this college under the supervision by UGC; as a Vocational subject for B.A. course of studies affiliated to University of Calcutta since 1999-2000 sessions. From beginning till 2017-18 the department offered B.A in Tourism & Travel Management programme. Then according to University Guidelines, the department offered B.A/B.Com (Major) in Tourism & Travel Management  (CBCS Programme) from 2018-19 up to 2022-23 sessions. Since 2023-24 onwards the department has been introduced BA/B.Sc (4-Year Hons with core vocational) in Tourism & Travel Management.

Teaching & Learning Technique: Tourism & Travel Management is multifaceted, blending theoretical knowledge with practical application.

  1. Lecture Method: It is a traditional method. Teacher delivers structured content in a formal setting, often using multimedia tools to enhance learning. Lectures are often supplemented with readings from textbooks, research articles.
  2. Project-Based Learning: Students engage in practical projects to apply Tourism & Travel Management concepts in real-world situations and develop practical skills.
  3. Seminars and Workshops: To foster collaboration, promote dialogue, and introduce students to the latest trends and technologies in the field.
  4. Collaborative Learning: Students collaborate on assignments, projects, or presentations to develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
  5. Field Trip: Visiting different tourist destination and conducting Hotel and Tourist survey and collecting different information that creates to understand about tourism industry. 
  6. Internships: Participating in internships with the help of Tourism Department Govt. of West Bengal that create to understand about tourism industry.
  7. Blended Learning: Combining face-to-face teaching with online resources such as recorded lectures, discussion boards, and digital reading materials.
  8. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: To develop analytical skills, improve decision-making, and encourage creative thinking..
  9. Peer Learning and Mentorship: To create a supportive learning environment that enhances understanding through collaborative sharing.
  10. LMS: We offer LMS (Learning Management System) to allow students to learn at their own pace while still having access to high-quality instructional materials.

Course Pattern

The undergraduate course includes both theoretical and practical elements. The course consists of eight semesters. During the course each student shall be required to undertake a practical training with the help of Dept. of Tourism Govt. of West Bengal.

B.A. / B.Sc. (Honours with core vocational) in Tourism & Travel Management (VTTM) programme:

  1. Two Minor subject i.e. History & Sociology for B.A in Tourism & Travel Management
  2. Two Minor subject i.e. Geography & Food Nutrition for B.Sc in Tourism & Travel Management
  3. Main subject Tourism & Travel Management
  4. IDC Paper according to availability of the subject.
  5. One compulsory language paper Bengali/ English/Hindi
  6. One compulsory paper of Environmental Studies

SWOC Analysis  

Strength

  • Only Girls College in North Kolkata where Professional/Vocational Degree course is offering; affiliated by University of Calcutta.
  • With very cheapest cost to get professional degree compare to private college. iii)      The department is provided best quality education to their students.
  • The department is provided Internship facility to the students with help of Dept. of Tourism Govt. of West Bengal. 
  • Placement assistance provided to the students after completion of the course.

Weakness

  • Shortage of fund for improvement of the department.
  • Lack of initiative taken by the Govt. to improve the department.
  • Shortage of Tourism Books.

Oppurtunity

  • In the present economic situation, it is very great opportunity to the Govt. to conduct this type professional course to create more employment opportunity.

Challenges 

  • Facing competition with private colleges without taking any grants from Govt.
  • To create more Industry Institute linkage for improvement professionalism of the department.

Future Plans of the department

  • The department has a plan to open up Master Degree course on Tourism & Travel Management. 
  • To built up more Industry Institute linkage.
