Departmental Profile

Department of Library and Information Studies is the youngest department in this college and pioneer in this course under University of Calcutta. Till now, we are in one college under University of Calcutta who continued the course. The department offers B.A/B.Sc. (Honours) in Library and Information Studies since 2019. Till now, three batches of students have successfully completed. The department also proudly informs that, 100% of them have been absorbed into different university and institution in Masters of Library and Information Science.

Teaching & Learning Techniques LIS education is multifaceted, blending theoretical knowledge with practical application. The methods vary to ensure that students develop both academic understanding and real-world skills, which are crucial in an ever-evolving information landscape.

  1. Lecture Method: It is a traditional method. Instructors deliver structured content in a formal setting, often using multimedia tools to enhance learning. Lectures are often supplemented with readings from textbooks, research articles.
  2. Project-Based Learning: Students engage in practical projects to apply LIS concepts in real-world situations and develop practical skills.
  3. Seminars and Workshops: To foster collaboration, promote dialogue, and introduce students to the latest trends and technologies in the field.
  4. Collaborative Learning: Students collaborate on assignments, research projects, or presentations todevelop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
  5. Field Trips and Internships: Visiting libraries, archives, information centers, and museums, or participating in internships with organizations that manage information systems.
  6. Blended Learning: Combining face-to-face teaching with online resources such as recorded lectures, discussion boards, and digital reading materials.
  7. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: To develop analytical skills, improve decision-making, and encourage creative thinking..
  8. Peer Learning and Mentorship: To create a supportive learning environment that enhances understanding through collaborative sharing.
  9. LMS: We offer LMS (Learning Management System) to allow students to learn at their own pace while still having access to high-quality instructional materials.

Course Outcome

  • Students can get admission to higher education program (MLIS, Phd.) and can qualify examinations like UGC-NET, SET etc. 
  • Library job in different Govt and non-Govt. Academic Institutions (School, College and Universities), National Library, Public Library, Special Library, Govt. (State and Central) office and Private Companies.
  • Teaching Job at different College and universities.
  • Research Scholar in different universities.

SWOC

  • Strength – This department is actively administered and gets academic and logistic cooperation from the Library department. There is no paucity of funds for book purchase. The department organizes field trip to different famous libraries to acquire different technical skills. The students also avail of the opportunity of paid internship in college library.
  • Weakness – Students’ strength is small.
  • Opportunity – There are opportunities to organize different certificate courses to equip them with technical skills.
  • Challenges – The department is facing challenges to devise unified certificate courses for all three years’ students. The department needs a separate computer laboratory.

Future Plans of the Department

  • The department has a plan to open up integrated BLIS-MLIS course in the college
  • As the two librarians have completed Ph.D., the librarians intend to apply for taking Ph.D. students from the affiliating university.
  • The department has a plan to open up certificate course on Website Development and Linux Administration.
